2021-22 POSTCARD FROM TENERIFE Monday 20 December – Monday 10 January

Not the best of starts.  A row of 5 picaninnes [and their mother] sat in the row behind me in BA Business class and nearly drove me mad.  In the end the crew kindly moved me to the front seat which luckily was empty.  At the airport I could find no car to meet me, but with my travel agent’s help I eventually located them. All a bit of a nightmare.

On arrival at the hotel they had given me a lower floor room instead of a higher floor room.  I am sure this comes from being a single lady – you get fobbed off with the worst room. Tried to change it at great expense but found there was no bath in the new room, so stayed put in the lower room.  Spent the evening unpacking, having a strong whisky and trying to calm down!  However, after dinner the very nice receptionist asked for me to visit him – he had ‘found’ a room on the 4th floor [top floor bar one] with a bath, and not quite so expensive as the other one.  So I then had to pack up and move with the help of a lovely young porter, and then unpack all over again!!!  How I did it all I will never know, but I did and was much happier then!

Sadly the first day was cloudy and rainy, so walked into the little town and bought some wine and then concentrated on my tapestry.  The sun came out occasionally in the afternoon, so lay on my balcony and my face had a little bit of a top up!

After that most days were spent by the pool on the rooftop, although the occasional cloudy afternoon meant a walk rather than a swim.  Unfortunately I got a lousy cold the first week, followed by a cough, which meant I wasn’t feeling as great as I usually do on holiday, and added to that I got sciatica, so swimming and sunbathing were not entirely pain free!

In week two it got busy on the rooftop pool so I went to the garden pool every day and did two lots of 10 lengths.  I spent the afternoons on my balcony a lot quieter and easier for me to walk around, thanks to the dreadful sciatica.  So it was mornings by the pool and afternoons on my balcony every day

Sadly the food in the hotel was poor – it was tapas every evening, or a buffet which was similar to tapas.  It is strange as you had to mask up every time you moved from your table.   You would think it would be better to sit at your table with a menu and let the waiters bring the food to you.  I shall be happy if I never see tapas again!!!

The last day was very windy and no sunshine, so a good day to pack up and do more tapestry!

I shall also be very happy to go home after this holiday – definitely not one of the best.
