Postcard from Greece - Friday 29th August–Friday 12 September 2014

After a very long day of travels on Friday 29th, I arrived in Skiathos with my friends Jackie and Anne.  We took ourselves out for a delicious dinner under the stars at The Big Bad Wolf at 11pm and then retired to unpack and settle in. On Saturday we relaxed by the pool all day, had a walk along the rather too busy Koukounaries beach, and enjoyed local bars in the evening!

On Sunday we had another day by the pool and then had a long early evening walk to look at beaches and views near to us, before enjoying a local bar, and then dinner in our hotel.  Monday was a very hot day by the pool and in the evening we took a sunset cruise, but as it was fairly rough out at sea we simply ambled around near to Skiathos Town before going to a small island taverna for an excellent dinner on the beach.

On 2nd September, my birthday, we took an island tour on a little boat called Mata Hari. Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse after two hours and we got very wet indeed.  We returned to Skiathos Town early through thunder and lightening, it was however a fun day!  In the evening we went to a rather mediocre BaBeQ in the hotel.  On Wednesday we took ourselves into Skiathos Town for the day.  Had a wonderful walk-around, stopping for the odd drink and an excellent lunch.  The evening was spent at a rather poor taverna.

On Thursday we spent the day by the pool and in the late afternoon walked to Mandraki beach and had dinner at a taverna close to the hotel.   Friday was departure day so after a brief spell by the pool in the morning, we took a taxi to the ferry and had a good trip across to Alonissos via Skopelos.  We checked into our very nice small hotel, The Atrium, where we all had lovely rooms with balconies overlooking the sea.  We walked down into Patitiri for dinner – quite a long walk downhill.  We decided that we would taxi back as it was a bit unnerving on the dark roads with cars coming at you.

On Saturday we spent the morning by the pool and then walked down to the beach for a delicious lunch – I had a great plate of sardines.  After that we lay on the beach and swam in the sea.  In the evening it was back into Town for another taverna dinner.  On Sunday it was a little cloudy and tried to rain so we went over to the Old Town for lunch and a good walk around, then back to our hotel before walking into Patitiri for dinner.  Monday was a walk to the little fishing village of Votsi in the morning and then an afternoon by the pool and dinner with some friends we met whilst in Skiathos.
Tuesday was spent by the pool and a quiet evening in Town, and on Wednesday we took a very good all-day boat trip in glorious weather, visiting an old monastery and having lots of swims interspersed with some food and wine on board!  In the evening we had a very poor evening meal and then went back to our rooms to pack.  On Thursday I spent a quiet morning by the pool and then we took the Flying Dolphin Ferry from Alonissos to the mainland and a then a bus to Athens, where we checked into the Dorian Inn Hotel.  Fortunately it had a lovely restaurant on the top floor where we had a nice dinner out of doors with a wonderful view of the Acropolis.  I spent the last morning quietly by the Dorian pool and Jackie and Anne went to the Acropolis, and in the late afternoon we were taxied to the airport and had a good flight to London.
