POSTCARD FROM CORSICA AND NICE 1-17 SEPTEMBER 2017
I met up with my friend Anne Hensman at
Heathrow on Friday 1st September and we set off on time on our BA flight for Nice. We had a few hours wait in Nice airport
before connecting with a pretty awful Air Corsica flight to Calvi – very basic
indeed. However, we eventually got to
our little hotel, the Liberata, around 6pm where we unpacked and drew a
breath! Later that evening we took
ourselves out for a very nice relaxing dinner at Escala in L’Ile Rousse, where our first course of sardines were served in a tin!
On Saturday, my birthday, I spent the
morning by the pool, while Anne wandered around the Town. In the afternoon Anne joined me for a while
and then we went into the small town for an Aperol Spritz and an ice cream! In the evening Anne bought me dinner at a
local Italian style restaurant. It was
not the best of meals, but we had fun.
Sunday was a day by the pool, but on Monday
we took ourselves by the little local train to Calvi and had a delightful day
there, walking at least six miles! We
came home late afternoon, and found ourselves a friendly restaurant for a quiet
dinner. Tuesday was a pool day, but we did have a lovely swim in the Med at the
end of the day, and enjoyed a wonderful dinner on the edge of the Med in the
evening.
The next day was a quiet one by the pool,
with a dip in the Med at the end of the afternoon, and then a long walk up to
the lighthouse. We dined at a great
restaurant close to the hotel. The
following few days were spent quietly by the pool, with short walks in the late
afternoon and then dining in local restaurants.
On Friday 8th September we were
driven by a local taxi to Ajaccio. A
long journey but through some beautiful countryside. We settled into our hotel, Les Mouettes, and
then took a long walk to find our way around.
That evening we dined in the hotel restaurant for the first and last
time. Dreadful menu and pretentious
food!
We spent our week relaxing by the pool,
walking around Ajaccio and trying different restaurants in the evening. We two found two brilliant ones and stuck
with them on the last few evenings.
On Friday 15th September we flew
from Ajaccio to Nice and found ourselves in a delightful little hotel, called
La Perouse. I had a room with fabulous
views of Nice. We had quite a good dinner in a very wet Nice that evening. On Saturday morning we took a bus to
St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and walked to Beaulieu-sur-Mer, and back to St-
Jean, and
then bussed to Villefranche where we had a nice lunch/drink before bussing back
to Nice. Having walked nearly nine
miles, a nice swim was welcome. In the
evening we walked down to the famous Hotel Negresco to have a look and moved
swiftly on to a restaurant not far away for a delightful dinner. In the end I think I walked almost 12 miles
that day!On our final day I took a little stroll to the harbour and then lay on the Solarium floor for an hour or so before going to the airport for our flight home to Heathrow at 3.30pm. A good holiday and all in some pretty good weather!
