2021 POSTCARD FROM THE CHANNEL ISLANDS Sunday 10 October-Wednesday 20 October

I had a very smooth flight to Jersey – we were on the way down almost before we were up!  Just time to sink some champagne and orange juice!

Checked into a very nice room at the St Brelade’s Bay Hotel with a stunning view and spent the early evening unpacking and sorting myself out. Had to sort a few problems, lack of wifi, no fridge, organising a tour etc.   I had a very average dinner in the hotel – a two course menu [far too much for me] was £34 so I asked for vegetarian menu [more than enough for me] which was a quarter of the price!

On day one I did an island tour in glorious sunshine– it was good to see the island so I knew where I was, so to speak, but we had a poor driver/guide who never stopped talking telling jokes and silly stories.  I was rather hoping to be told more about the island.  Instead of lunch [with a bus load] I went across the road and visited the fascinating Military Museum.  Once we got to a tea stop which was ten minutes from the hotel, I walked back and managed to find an off licence en route so that I can enjoy a drink or two in my room!  Another poor dinner in the hotel.

On day two I walked around St Brelade’s Bay and then walked to St Aubin and back [about 6 miles with some steep hills!].  Enjoyed wandering around the little town and harbour.  Another glorious day so spent the early afternoon on my balcony.  Later on I went down to the beach and
paddled along the water’s edge along St Brelade’s Bay and Ouaisne Bay and back – a good mile or two!  That evening I had some fish and chips at the hotel bar!

On Day three I took a taxi to the Jersey War Tunnels and spent an hour or so there, and then took a bus into St Helier.  On another lovely day I wandered around for an hour before taking a bus back to St Brelade’s.  After some late lunch on my balcony I then walked  the beach again a good before relaxing on my balcony for a while.  That evening I took myself over to the Oyster Box for dinner.  Much better food than the hotel, but sadly they are only open 5 days a week.

On my last full day in Jersey this week, I walked the beach again before the tide came up and then walked up to the little town of St Brelade.  It was another beautiful day – not a cloud all day – so I spent the afternoon on my balcony.  In the evening I returned to the Oyster Box for a very nice dinner.

On Friday I took a flight to Guernsey and had a dreadful time on arrival trying to sort their ‘travel tracker’ and in the end had to pay £25 for an antigen self-test.  Guernsey doesn’t accept the NHS App – about the only country in the world that doesn’t!  So my car had given up – hence it had to be recalled.  However, had a lovely room with a balcony and a nice view – although not quite as good as the view from St Brelade’s!  Went for a walk in St Peter Port and visited the Thomas de la Rue pub!  On Saturday I wandered back into St Peter Port and took a tour of Castle Cornet – managed to walk six miles on my wander!  On Sunday I did a bus tour of the island – this time it was a good tour which was very informative.  Glorious weather all the way through.

On Monday I returned to Jersey – the first [and only] day of bad weather – tipped with rain in both Guernsey and Jersey! Another performance getting into Jersey – and another PCR test!  And another lost car, so had to ring up for it.  Tuesday was another glorious day so a beach walk and a stroll around the local area.  Sat in the sunshine on my balcony in the afternoon.  Then it was packing that evening, ready for a very early flight on Wednesday morning.

A good holiday in the Channel Islands in glorious weather!
