POSTCARD FROM MYKONOS, GREECE - 14 - 28 June 2021
Hotel Kouros is OK but lots of hiccups and challenges. I did at least have a very small balcony so could sit out in sunshine. However, very few electric plugs, coffee maker very weird, hotel full of steps everywhere, so not easy to get about! Anyway after unpacking and sorting myself I went to the hotel restaurant for dinner. Ok, but all rather over the top, especially in price!
After a good night, I went down to breakfast which was very poor indeed. A ‘soup bowl’ of flakes and milk and a ‘soup bowl’ of scrambled egg and bacon were both plonked in front of me at the same time. Both not good! Thankfully I saw the GM soon after and told him what I thought! I then walked into Mykonos Old Town and bought
some wine and nuts for my room. Once back in the hotel I spent the rest of the day by the big pool, even if a little chilly at times, the pool itself was very cold and very difficult to get into – no handrails or steps to be seen. Managed a few lengths in the smaller [and cold] pool in the afternoon before calling it a day. Walked into the Old Town for a nice dinner in the evening.
On day three things got better and I got braver! Breakfast was better.
The weather was a lot better – no wind and lots of sunshine. Down at the pool I managed to find a way of getting into the larger pool without slipping over. So had a good day in the sunshine and a had a good walk into Town for dinner in the evening.
Went into the old town each evening for dinner, sometimes good and sometimes not so good. One evening found my way over to Little Venice and to see the famous windmills before stopping off for dinner on my way back to the hotel.
Very noisy at the hotel, being under the flight path and overlooking the ferry port. Constant flow of inter-island ferries which make a dreadful noise, hooting, tannoys and dropping anchor, as well as local ferries which chug across in front of the hotel. On top of that almost every day there has been a cruise ship – on one day there were two and the second one dropped anchor right in front of the hotel.
On the last Friday I headed up to the local hospital for my PCR test at 8am which thankfully came back negative the next day. On Saturday, they closed the big pool for ‘maintenance’ so everyone was squashed into the ‘goldfish’ bowl pool by the restaurant. Apparently ‘maintenance’ is to put music by the pool – thank goodness I only have one day left – there is enough noise by that pool [from flights and ferries] already without thumping music as well!
Final day by the pool was fairly peaceful and only some quiet music, thankfullh. However, it got quite windy, so brollies had to be taken down. Hence, as it was very hot, I retired to my room by 3 o’clock and relaxed there. Then a final meal in the Old Town.
I spent the final morning in my room, and then had a very easy flight to London, with very easy immigration at Heathrow. En route home within 40 minutes of landing. Although the hotel was average it was good to get away and enjoy some lovely sunshine for two weeks.
